What is a union?
A union is a group of workers who come together to stand up for one another when unfair things happen so that nobody is alone, this helps them have more power and protection.
What does a union do?
Unions help workers send a unified message to their bosses about things that they would like to see changed in order to do their jobs better or improve their lives. Good examples are getting more supplies, having smaller class sizes and safer classrooms.
what is a strike?
Strikes only happen after workers have tried talking with their bosses to fix the problems first, but feel they weren’t listened to and that nothing has changed. A strike helps them to come together to speak loudly as one team so that their bosses have to listen to them and fix problems. Even though it may look like people “aren’t working,” the workers’ goal is to publicly join together to be seen as they advocate for better working conditions for staff and better learning conditions for students.
remember:
The reason teachers and support staff workers are on strike is because many of the problems we have raised with the bosses directly affect students and their learning. We didn’t feel that our message was heard and now this is our attempt to be heard and to fix the problems. Strikes are not the students’ fault, and students have done nothing wrong. Teachers and support staff would rather be at school working and teaching and helping students. We know that it is hard not being in school. We want to be there with you all too. This is a temporary action to make things better for us all.
